2013 Mike Lee Stakes

Mike Lee Stakes – Belmont Park – Saturday, June 01, 2013
(Post Time: 3:09) Surface: Dirt,
7 Furlongs, State Bred, Open,
3 Year Olds, Purse: $125,000

With seven stakes on a 10-race card worth $1 million, New York-bred horses will get their chance to shine at Belmont Park for the first “Big Apple Showcase Day.”

In the $100,000 Mike Lee, the first leg of the Big Apple Triple for 3-year-olds, New York-breds juvenile champion Weekend Hideaway and West Hills Giant are expected to vie for favoritism in their return to statebred company.

Let’s take a look at the field:

1 West Hills Giant – Returns to dirt off the freshening and cuts back in distance. He should prove tough in with the NY breds once again.

2 Amberjack – A definite commodity on wet tracks but the track is expected to be dry and fast. Trainer does pull many surprises.

3 Bond Vigilante – Gets the jump in class coming off impressive maiden victory going 8f. Hasn’t raced since March but is training well.

4 Belief System – Has been flawless since being switched to trainer Rudy Rodriquez. Comes off the $100k NYSS win with a good looking run style.

5 Smooth Bert – Two career wins were both over a wet track but he has shown some ability on fast tracks. Attracted John Velazquez to ride.

6 Soul House – Has a possibility to be a star. Won at 1st asking at SAR last summer. Laid off until May 4th where he was a late charging 3rd in 1st level allowance.

7 Hay Shares – Undefeated in 3 career starts but gets the acid test here. Sire was hard to get by as is ‘Hay’.

8 Run Run Forrest – Won 3 of 6 lifetime including an open company OC. Late runner would benefit from a hot pace on the front end.

9 Weekend Hideaway – Won a $125k and a $100k NY bred stakes races last year. Not much in 2 starts this year but has been freshened and training well.
